Letter: Watch for bikers and pedestrians this holiday season
Folks, Hilton Head Island has been inundated by Thanksgiving visitors. Recent studies show that nearly half will ride a bike at least once during their stay. While our town and POA leaders and staffs have done and are doing a terrific job in the Hurricane Mathew recovery effort, it is still a work in progress. So a few words of advice and a warning about these upcoming days and weeks.
Bikers and pedestrians: in many places, cars cannot see you behind the debris piles. Be especially careful on our pathways when crossing driveways and at intersections and crosswalks, especially where there may be turning vehicles.
Cars: bikers and pedestrians cannot see you when and where there are debris piles. And on some roadways where cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles share the road, there is no margin for error. So please use extreme caution, be especially watchful and be patient.
Let’s all enjoy and share the Thanksgiving spirit and send our visitors home safely with memories of a great visit.
Thank you all in advance for your support of our biking friendly community as we work our way through this recovery.
