Letter: Why Washington no longer works

It is very possible that on Nov. 8 we witnessed the results of the divide-and-conquer mindset of the political class.

A few generations ago, both political parties included a wide spectrum of ideas. It was possible for the Democrats and Republicans to carry on a civil conversation and compromise on important issues. While big government never “works,” each side thought it had some ownership.

Somewhere along the line, each party started to push for a single agenda. No other views were accepted. President Barack Obama had his agenda, which was totally different from that of the Republicans. Washington still did not work, and there was no civil conversation and no compromise, and, more importantly, no ownership.

People across the country knew this in their gut and were “mad as hell.” They finally spoke up.
