Letter: Beaufort family deserves salute
I had the honor of towing a float in the city of Beaufort’s annual Veterans Day Parade on Friday.
While I expected the usual “thank you for your service” comments from the crowd as we passed, one particular couple made my day. You were standing in the 1500 block of Bay Street with your preschool-age children. As we made our way up Bay Street, I noticed that when the float ahead of ours approached, you leaned down to your children, said something, and pointed to the float as it passed.
My initial thought was that perhaps you knew someone riding on the float. When we got to where you were standing, I realized what you were doing. You pointed to the American flag on our float and when I looked at your children they were proudly standing and had placed their hands over their hearts to salute the flag.
Thank you for teaching your children respect for the Stars and Stripes. Your actions made my day.
