Letter: Patriot Guard Riders on duty

The article “Ailing WWII veteran watches grandson become a Marine” in the Nov. 5 paper stated that members of a local motorcycle club escorted James Pike from Savannah to Beaufort. I’m writing to inform you that it was not a local motorcycle club.

It was the Patriot Guard Riders, a national organization, not a club, whose main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. These heroes include veterans and first responders. We also provide honor missions such as the one for Mr. Pike.

We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. That is an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. Our members are mostly veterans, but also anyone who shares that respect.
