Letter: Beware of bright, shiny objects

We are all attracted to bright, shiny objects. It’s what makes us slow down to look over when we see flashing blue lights, car wrecks off the side of the road and sometimes, ambulances and fire engines responding to the injured people in those car wrecks.

It is that same attraction to bright, shiny objects that makes people watch Donald Trump. With his blond Elvis hair, his swaggering walk, his orangey skin and the flashing white teeth, people can’t stop looking at him. His flailing arms, hand gestures and exaggerated facial expressions are almost hypnotic and no one can predict what is going to come out of his mouth. He is, for sure, different than anyone who has run for president before.

Trump is bored and unsatisfied with being a reality TV guy, a beauty pageant guy and a real estate guy. He’s 70 now, on his third wife and has five children. Trump supports all of them in grand style, no doubt. He has always gotten what he wants, when he wants it. He has never worked for anyone else or within a business where he has had to report to someone higher up.

I got past my attraction to the bright, shiny Trump. I began thinking about the importance of choosing the next president of the United States. My decision has always come down to qualifications and demeanor. My president represents me, all of us, all over the world and I want to be proud of that person.

Beware of bright, shiny objects.
