Letter: Thank the Salvation Army
Regarding “Unsung Heroes,” I would like to nominate Majors Bryan and Marie Tatterson, local commanding officers of the Salvation Army for their work during Hurricane Matthew.
They and their staff provide 8,000 meals to 3,000 individuals. They stayed behind, and with the help of a mobile kitchen dispatched from Anderson, initially provided three meals a day for seven days, serving personnel manning the Beaufort County Emergency Operations Center.
They continued doing the same for the shelters at Battery Creek High School, Bluffton High School, Sea Island Presbyterian Church and Hilton Head Island High School.
They obtained meals for people who required special diets. When their staff was able to return, they immediately went to work feeding and planning to assist in other ways, such as providing emergency assistance in the form of Family Store goods and utility-bill help.
The Salvation Army is on the spot in all disasters, working behind the scenes with little recognition. Remember them when you pass by the kettles this month and next.
