Letter: What nation needs is compassion

Hurricane Matthew brought out the best from many of our fellow citizens. The other storm that is brewing is bringing out the worse in many of us. It is the political storm that will last, at the least, through the election on Nov. 8.

How should we respond to that other storm? The major religions of the world tell us to respond by doing unto others as we would have them do unto us. Over the next two weeks, the challenge to those who consider themselves religious persons is to respect the worth and dignity of all fellow citizens. The “Golden Rule” is considered to be the rule of compassion by many. What our country needs a lot of at this time is plain and simple compassion among its people.
