Letter: Island mayor did right thing
I live a few houses down from Hilton Head Island Mayor David Bennett. I survived Hurricane Matthew for various reasons. We had 1 to 2 feet of water due to blocked storm drains. The mayor’s house was bracketed by trees and was not accessible for three days. We could not drive out for three days.
The mayor was in Orlando on vacation and was following the storm, which passed Orlando. It went up the coast of Florida towards Hilton Head. It was projected to go east but made a turn west in Savannah and proceeded to Hilton Head. He was in constant contact with Hilton Head. He had to travel up Interstate 95 to get to our bridge, which was closed pending an inspection.
Consider that his family was with him and he could not get home. Were they expected to sleep on cots in the Town Hall? Dave did the best that he could do under the circumstances. Calling for him to resign is ludicrous. He is a part-time mayor trying to make our island a place to live with comfort.
