Letter: Global warming is no myth
In a recent letter, the writer questions the ability of climatologists to prove “the myths of global warming.” Abundant scientific evidence shows that markedly elevated atmospheric CO2 levels are the result of human activity, and that this is a major cause of “global warming.”
Some of the evidence is rather complex. For example, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is not easily understood, unlike the stark clarity of the temperature of the earth. Indeed 97 percent of all climatologists believe in human induced “climate change,” the more comprehensive term for global warming.
Global warming is not a conspiracy “to change everything in our daily lives,” or to overthrow capitalism and thus destroy American businesses. However, we as a nation must employ cleaner energy sources (e.g., natural gas is preferable to coal and oil), and we must seek to develop renewable energy that is clean and efficient. This is essential for the sake of our children, grandchildren and for future unborn generations.
We as a coastal community with its inherent vulnerability should realize these facts and start to plan accordingly.
