Letter: Divisiveness must end

I suppose, I’m naïve. I would like to believe we all care about our country even though we see things differently. Since many of us espouse moral values, either with a religious (whatever religion that may be) foundation or not, aren’t there some things that most of us are alike in caring about: human decency, respect for our fellow human beings, a dream to make a better world for all, and a wish to comfort and sustain those who through no fault of their own are born into poverty or are living in war ravaged regions?

I am disheartened that this election is making many of us fearful and angry and desperate, driving us into different camps, divided by a rift that will be difficult to span.

Whatever the outcome, is it possible that we can accept it and can come together in the spirit of civility and community, understanding that there are viewpoints other than our own? I want to believe no one candidate or party can permanently drive us apart. But as I said, I suppose I’m naïve.
