Letter: Criticism too quick, and undeserved

The Town of Hilton Head Island is barely back in business and I am truly amazed at the criticism already being leveled at Mayor David Bennett and the rest of the town leadership.

I am someone who chose to stay on the island during Hurricane Matthew and was amazed with how rapidly the town was brought back to life. I only had my cell phone for communication, and guarded my time using the phone. As such I did not have any news other than what family and friends would tell me when I spoke to them.

The thing that flabbergasted me was as early as Sunday the town leadership was being heavily criticized on social media for not opening access to the island. Quite honestly, I believe allowing access on Tuesday at 3 p.m. was too early, but leadership was and is being criticized, no matter which decision they made.

Too-early access or too-late access is a moot point at this juncture. We are all here now so let’s work together and quit Monday morning quarterbacking and focus on returning to normal.
