Letter: Bennett wrong to stay in Florida
I have just read your report of Hilton Head Island Mayor David Bennett returning to the island today from Orlando and find his action not to return prior to Hurricane Matthew while the Savannah airport was still open disturbing and showing a complete lack of leadership.
Furthermore, the excuse that staying in Orlando gave him access to the internet is feeble at best and disingenuous.
In addition, why would he not return on Saturday or Sunday after the storm passed to be “physically present” to evaluate the situation rather than getting reports between visits to Disney World with his family?
The mayor’s office has responsibilities and Mayor Bennett did not perform when performance was essential as many plantation officials recommended delaying the return to the island for more time to clean streets, which he was unable to assess personally because he was “missing in action” or AWOL.
