Letter: United in fear of Trump

Rather than my usual letter documenting boastful, bigoted, bombastic bully Donald Trump’s latest lies and flip-flops, I’d like to tell you about a great guy I met on a tennis court in the community where we have our summer home.

Steve and his wife Carol are Baptist missionaries to the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) in West Africa. Their work consists of administrating a regional health center and microfinance program while also addressing their missionary calling. You can learn more about their ministry by going to their website.

Steve and Carol are currently on a six-month sabbatical, during which time they are still working on various projects in the Ivory Coast.

This morning after playing tennis, Steve and I got into a discussion about Donald Trump and what Jesus would have thought about him. Steve and I have some very different views. I’m an atheist-leaning agnostic, while he is a devout Christian. I’m a pro-choice Democrat and he is a pro-life Independent. However, there are also things on which we agree. Paramount among them, at least for this letter, is the belief that Donald Trump’s election would be a disaster for both the U.S. and the world.

I very much doubt that Jesus, a man whose views — at least on social and economic matters — we both very much admire, would vote for “The Donald.”
