Letter: Paper aids decline of civility
Warning, this letter contains sarcasm: A recent edition of this newspaper had a contemptible cartoon showing the Republican candidate watching a news channel promoting the concept that half of his supporters are “deplorable.” Behind him were two figures, one dressed in a white sheet with a pointed hood, the other, a fat white guy with a Confederate flag on his T-shirt. The implication being that the “deplorables” are supporters of the unspeakable KKK.
The fact that this paper would print such invective says a lot about the decline of the media and delineates this paper. I ask myself how in the world can that cartoon help improve the state of race relations in this country. It is abundantly clear that the media hate the Republican candidate because he is not a progressive (that’s a virtual reality/political term). I get that, but does it have to stoop to race baiting in order to try to salvage a failed Democrat/socialist?
A few months ago I submitted a photograph taken on Confederate Memorial Day of a young lady placing a wreath at the National Cemetery. It has not been printed. I received a condescending email to say that there was a long list of photos of sunsets, squirrels and alligators, and therefore it may not be possible to publish.
The theme of the service at the cemetery was “conciliation.” This newspaper would do well to adopt a similar theme, rather than promoting the decline of civility.
