Letter: Better way to address murder rate
African American editorialist Tommy Sotomayor’s YouTube video inconveniently points out that 52 percent of the murders in this country are committed by 13 percent of the population — a group that no American, regardless of race, wishes to live with, but many have no choice. They terrorize any community they are in, brutalizing anyone with the slightest inclination to remove their influence in the community.
Chicago has had more than 500 murders this year. If the majority of those murders were primarily in Caucasian neighborhoods, the National Guard would be patrolling the streets.
It would be wise for the privileged NFL athletes to stop their self-serving gestures that bring attention to their flagging popularity and take a page out of Ray Lewis and Jason Whitlock’s playbook. Both men are in their community supporting two-parent families, education, and job opportunities. This is in contrast to liberal views perpetuating government dependency. Everyone would support that type of action over self-serving gestures.
