Letter: Local election deserves attention
With so much attention focused on the top of the ticket in this election season, it is easy to forget that the races that often have the most impact on our daily lives are those at the local level.
In that regard, this year’s election for several positions on the Beaufort County Board of Education is most important. If you have been following this newspaper’s excellent series on the shenanigans of the school board, you know which members should be replaced with smart, hard-working people who are committed to open and ethical governance.
JoAnn Orischak, who is running unopposed, is one of the few bright lights on an otherwise pathetic panel.
Even if you do not have children in the school system, you should want a board that is not afraid to exercise its oversight responsibilities and does not treat its constituents like kindergartners. Earl Campbell and Paul Roth condone nepotism, oppose transparency and are a rubber stamp for the superintendent’s office. They do not deserve our vote.
