Letter: Remember what Congress did — and did not — do

The total number of days Congress is scheduled to be in session this year is only 111 days.

That’s not quite a third of the year. With their pay and pensions, could we expect a few more days?

But after Speaker Paul Ryan did open Congress after the Democrats staged a sit-in wanting a vote to stop those on the no-fly list from being able to purchase guns, and a more thorough background check, perhaps 111 days are too many.

The GOP’s first step after opening session was an attempt to overturn the veto Obama used on a law that would allow financial advisers the ability to cheat clients on 401s and retirement planning. Why would they try to pass such a law in the first place?

Last year, the Central States Pension Fund sought to reduce its payments to 115,000 retired employees by 28 percent. Fortunately, it was not a GOP treasurer but a Democrat who rejected this proposal.

Does anyone in the GOP Congress represent the common person or just the NRA?

Have they no shame? Are you going to remember this action at the next election?
