Why you should vote yes on Beaufort County’s 1% transportation sales tax | Opinion
Beaufort County is at a crossroads. As our population grows, so do our infrastructure needs.
The proposed 1% transportation sales tax on the Nov. 5 ballot, which would generate an estimated $950 million over 10 years, offers a smart and necessary solution. This funding will go toward improving roads, intersections and public spaces, including $50 million for greenbelt acquisitions to preserve our natural environment. Voting “yes” on this tax is an investment in the safety, economy and sustainability of our county.
Anyone who has driven through Beaufort County has experienced the frustration of congested roads and poorly functioning intersections. With more people moving to the area, our infrastructure is struggling to keep up. Traffic congestion isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a safety issue. The longer we delay addressing these problems, the more costly they will become.
The proposed tax will fund critical improvements to roadways and intersections, reducing bottlenecks and improving safety. Upgrading our infrastructure will also make commutes faster, allowing people to spend less time in traffic. These improvements will also enhance access to businesses, supporting local commerce and encouraging economic growth. Efficient transportation networks are key to a thriving community, and this tax will help ensure we remain competitive.
Beyond infrastructure, the tax includes $50 million for greenbelt acquisitions. This funding will allow us to preserve open spaces, marshes, forests and parks that define the natural beauty of Beaufort County. As development continues, these acquisitions are essential to prevent urban sprawl and protect our environment for future generations.
Preserving green spaces not only enhances our quality of life but also supports environmental resilience. Protecting these areas can help manage flooding and protect ecosystems, making our community more sustainable and resilient.
A key concern for any large project is accountability, and Beaufort County Council has addressed this by committing to form a Citizens Led Oversight Committee. This group, similar to one successfully used by the Beaufort County School District, will oversee the referendum projects, schedules and expenses. The committee will ensure transparency and that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and effectively. This guarantees the public can trust the funds will be used wisely.
One of the key strengths of the 1% sales tax is its fairness. A sales tax ensures that everyone who benefits from improved infrastructure, including tourists and seasonal visitors, contributes their fair share. Rather than placing the burden solely on property owners or residents, the tax spreads the cost across millions of transactions, making it manageable for everyone.
Additionally, because the tax is tied to consumption, it scales with the economy. As the county grows, so will the tax revenue, ensuring enough funding for projects without placing an undue burden on local taxpayers.
Failing to act now will only result in more costly problems down the road. Traffic will worsen, roads will deteriorate, and our natural spaces will shrink under the pressure of unchecked development. Neglecting these issues risks the safety of drivers and pedestrians and stifles economic growth.
In contrast, the 1% transportation sales tax offers a proactive, long-term solution. By improving our roads and intersections, we’ll reduce costs associated with vehicle repairs and inefficiencies. By protecting our green spaces, we’ll preserve Beaufort County’s character, making it a desirable place to live and visit.
The 1% transportation sales tax is more than a fix for today’s problems — it’s an investment in Beaufort County’s future. By improving our infrastructure and preserving our environment, we can ensure a better quality of life for all residents. Roads will be safer, commutes will be shorter, and natural spaces will remain intact for future generations.
Voting “yes” means supporting a vision where growth is balanced with sustainability, where our infrastructure meets the needs of our community, and where our natural beauty is protected.
