Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, for good of Beaufort city residents
Unfortunately, the truth often takes a backseat to perception.
That’s why our public officials and elected leaders must tread carefully in all they do, and even those who do everything above board must consider how something looks.
And, that is why we urge David Prichard, Beaufort’s director of Community and Economic Development, to do everything in his power to shine a light on his work and its connections with developer 303 Associates LLC.
Reporter Karl Puckett wrote this week about ties between the company and Vanessa Prichard, David Prichard’s wife.
Vanessa Prichard works for 303 Associates as a leasing manager, a role that is not tied to the development projects in the city.
Her husband’s role with the city involves reviewing building projects in the city and 303 Associates currently has several proposed projects planned for the historic district.
While the city has not sought official guidance from the State Ethics Commission, Mayor Stephen Murray told our reporter, “I certainly believe it’s not a good perception and I wished she worked somewhere else.”
Murray learned of Prichard’s ties to the company after a Christmas party photo, featuring the couple, was posted on Facebook and discussed the matter with City Manager Bill Prokop.
Given the city’s legal entanglement with 303 Associates and the other parties over the downtown projects, Murray said, “it certainly makes me uncomfortable.”
Uncomfortable, of course, doesn’t make something inappropriate, but it does raise concerns as city officials ask city residents to have faith in the work they do.
City spokeswoman Kathleen Williams told our reporter that the city has no legal standing to tell the spouse of a city employee where they can work.
Williams said Vanessa Prichard’s employment has caused no conflict of interest up to this point “nor do we expect it to in the future.”
We hope it doesn’t, but as the city moves ahead on the various projects we encourage David Prichard to keep the public informed every step of the way to insure that the public’s interests are protected from any potential conflicts of interest, real or merely perceived.
