Here’s what to know as Tropical Storm Erin moves across the Atlantic
As meteorologists keep a close eye on Tropical Storm Erin as it churns across the Atlantic, it’s still too soon to tell what its impacts will be to Hilton Head and the surrounding area.
As of Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Center said the storm is likely to develop into a hurricane in the coming days, making it the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2025 season.
Tropical Storm Erin formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Monday and it is currently moving westward. The National Hurricane Center expects this westward movement to continue until Thursday night when it will begin moving north-west.
The storm will move close enough to the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico that metrologists warn the storm may impact those areas this weekend.
It’s too early to tell what impact Erin will have on Hilton Head, though Neil Dixon, lead meteorologists at the National Weather Service’s Charleston office, said the storm may cause dangerous rip currents on local beaches.
Rip current risk is low in South Carolina both Wednesday and Thursday. Any rip current advisories that develop as a result of the storm will likely arrive in the area next week.
