Emergency shelter for people — pets, too — opens Thursday in Jasper County

Anyone who needs a temporary place to stay as Tropical Storm Ian moves through the Lowcountry can do so at a shelter set to open Thursday, according to an alert from Jasper County Emergency Services.

The shelter will open starting at 5 p.m. and is located at Ridgeland High School, 250 Jaguar Trail.

Pets are welcome at the shelter, but only service animals will be allowed in the main shelter area for safety reasons. All other animals will be required to be crated at all times, according to Kim Recchia, a spokesperson for Jasper County Emergency Management Services.

People coming to the shelter should bring hygiene products, medication, bedding, identification documents and a seven-day supply of medication along with prescription information. Those with restrictive diets should bring at least enough food for three days.

Pets should have the following: Proof of vaccination and rabies certificate, crate, food, litter box, any medicines they take.

Other shelters will be opening up on a need-basis. That list will be updated and can be found by checking the South Carolina Emergency Management Division website at https://scemd.org/stay-informed/emergency-shelters/
