Find out where you can harvest shellfish in Beaufort County after Hurricane Matthew

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has reopened some shellfish harvesting areas around Beaufort and Jasper counties after they were closed due to excessive rainfall during Hurricane Matthew.

The approved harvesting comes after local oyster and clam data indicated the approved harvesting areas are suitable, according to a DHEC news release.

The reopening includes beds in Skull, Broad and Bull creeks and Calibogue Sound along with Battery, Wallace Distant Island and Chowan creeks.

A few areas in both counties remain closed and will reopen once sampling results indicate conditions are suitable for harvesting.

Information on those areas can be viewed at www.dhec.gov/shellfish by selecting the closure update link.
