First look: Island Luthern Church escapes hurricane unscathed

Save for a damp patch of carpet by a back door, Island Lutheran Church escaped the flooding that Matthews seemed to rain down on so much else on Hilton Head's Main Street.

George Clawson, head trustee, walked through the church for the first time on Wednesday and expressed relief after checking on what he figured would be trouble spots: the social hall and bathrooms.

"It feels good," he said. "I've been getting calls — ‘How's the church, how's the church, how's the church?' They're worried about everything."
