Across the island, giant oaks had toppled onto cars and homes, into roadways and over power lines.
But there were countless near-misses, and these trees were the ones that remained on Sunday afternoon, as the National Guard, emergency management, fire and rescue crews and residents focused their attention on impasses and damage.
At Hilton Head Island Elementary School, one uprooted tree had barely scraped the corner of a playground sign before coming to a rest flush against it.
On Palmetto Bay Road, another huge oak lay on the sidewalk perfectly parallel to the shops.
Other trees rested next to guard stations, just in front of Reilley's Wine and Spirits and alongside dozens of homes.
