UPDATE: Thunderstorms with pea-sized hail in Midlands Monday - gusts as high as 50 mph

The NWS Columbia SC issued an updated weather alert at 8 p.m. on Monday for strong thunderstorms until 8:30 p.m. The alert is for Northwestern Orangeburg, Central Orangeburg and Southeastern Orangeburg as well as Calhoun and Clarendon counties.
Wind gusts of up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) are anticipated.
"At 8 p.m., Doppler radar tracked strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Brookdale to 8 miles northwest of Holly Hill to near Cross. Movement was south at 20 mph," states the NWS. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible."
Locations impacted by the alert include Orangeburg, Brookdale, Holly Hill, Bowman, Elloree, Orangeburg County Airport, Santee State Park, Claflin College, South Carolina State University, Santee, Cameron, Eutawville, Vance, Poplar Creek Landing, Stumphole Landing, Rocks Pond Campground, Marina, Yonder Field, Wilkinson Heights, Prince of Orange Mall and and Eautaw Springs. This includes the following highways: Interstate 26 between mile markers 143 and 169. Interstate 95 between mile markers 85 and 106.
The NWS states, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle."
This alert is in effect until 8:30 p.m.
How to react when facing a lightning hazard?
Lightning hits the United States approximately 25 million times annually. The majority of these strikes happen during the summer, causing around 20 fatalities each year, according to the NWS. The likelihood of lightning increases as a thunderstorm gets closer and reaches its highest point when the storm is directly overhead. This risk decreases as the storm moves away.
Here are recommendations for maintaining safety during a thunderstorm:
- To minimize risk of being struck by lightning, when going outside, have a plan to get to a safer place.
- If the sky turns ominous and thunder can be heard, find a secure place for shelter.
- Once inside, avoid contact with corded phones, electrical equipment, plumbing, and windows and doors.
- Wait for 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder before going back out.
If finding indoor shelter is not an option:
- Avoid open fields, hill peaks, or ridge tops.
- Keep a distance from tall, solitary trees or other elevated structures. When in a forest, stay in proximity to shorter tree groupings.
- When in a group, space out to prevent the current from transferring between individuals.
- If you are camping in an open space, choose a valley, ravine, or low area for your campsite. Remember, tents do not shield you from lightning.
- Stay away from water, wet items, and metal objects. Water and metal do not attract lightning but they are excellent conductors of electricity.
What to do in the rain on the road?
- Turn on headlights - Even in daylight, using headlights can help improve visibility and let other drivers know where you are.
- While on the road - Opt for the middle lanes and remain on higher ground. Rainwater tends to gather along the road edges.
- Steer clear of puddles - Driving into puddles or low areas of rainwater can cause vehicles to hydroplane or skid out of control.
- Do not follow large vehicles closely - Large vehicles like trucks or buses can create a spray of water that can reduce your visibility.
- Avoid flooded zones - If you encounter a flooded road, make a U-turn and go back. The powerful currents of flash floods can carry drivers off the road. Driving through deep water can also damage a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems.
What is hydroplaning?
Hydroplaning is when a vehicle starts uncontrollably sliding on wet roads.
This happens when water in front of the tire builds up faster than the vehicle's weight can push water out of the way. The water pressure then causes the vehicle to rise and slide on a thin layer of water between the tires and the road, making the driver lose control.
