With bitter cold temperatures expected to settle over the Lowcountry on Sunday, Dec. 14, two local warming shelters are opening their doors to provide warm spaces for those in need.

According to the National Weather Service, an arctic cold front will push into the region Sunday afternoon, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the season.

Overnight lows Sunday are expected to drop into the upper teens inland and the lower to mid-20s along the coast. A cold weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday, with wind chills forecast between 11 and 20 degrees.

Warming shelters opening Sunday & Monday

Two shelters will operate both Sunday, Dec. 14 and Monday, Dec. 15, opening at 5:30 p.m. and closing at 7:30 a.m. the following morning.

Sea Island Presbyterian Church: Beaufort

Cold weather forecast

Here’s a look at the cold weather forecast for Sunday through Tuesday, according to the NWS.

Sunday, Dec. 14

Mostly sunny during the day, high near 62 degrees. There is a 20% chance of showers before 1 p.m. Sunday night is mostly clear, with a low around 27.

Monday, Dec. 15

Even with sunshine, Monday’s high temperature is only expected to reach around 42 degrees – 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. The evening brings a low of about 33.

Tuesday, Dec. 16

Tuesday brings a slight warmup, with temperatures reaching a high of 55 during the day and a low of 42 in the evening. Conditions are expected to gradually warm throughout the week.
