Hurricane season has officially begun, and now, the first named storm of the season has kicked off the Atlantic season.

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Andrea has formed about 1,205 miles west of the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, traveling east-northeastward at 17 mph.

Luckily, it seems like Andrea won’t be sticking around for long. Andrea has a max wind speed of 40 mph and poses no threat to land.

The NWS states that they anticipate this storm to continue moving for the next day and then weaken and dissipate on Wednesday night over the ocean.

The National Hurricane Center has been tracking Andrea since Sunday, but due to recent thunderstorm activity near the center of the storm on Tuesday morning, it deemed Andrea the first Atlantic tropical storm of 2025.

In terms of historic storm formation timelines from 1991 to 2020, Andrea is right on track. According to the NHC, the first named storms in the Atlantic typically form in mid to late June.

The next three storm names on the docket are:

  • Barry

  • Chantal

  • Dexter
