Week 1: storm season 2025 brings Hilton Head area heavy rains but no tropical disturbances
Hilton Head and the surrounding areas will see rain and thunderstorms through the end of the week. Coastal low pressure developing in northeast Florida into Georgia and South Carolina bringing unsettled conditions, including rainfall, possible moderate flooding and an increased risk for rip currents.
Earlier in the week meteorologists said there was a small risk that the system could acquire tropical characteristics if it moved out over the ocean. Because the low pressure moves inland over the state and not out on the ocean, there is no chance that this system will form a cyclone, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Rain fall and flooding
The system will bring showers and thunderstorms that will move over the region today. As the low pressure moves overhead, that rain will continue overnight and linger into Thursday. One to three inches of rainfall is expected across the region, according to a briefing from the NWS.
Meteorologists expect the rainfall to lead to minor flooding through much of Beaufort County, though the risk is highest in Charleston. Isolated flash flooding is also possible. Any flooding will most likely occur in low-lying urban areas with poor drainage.
Rip Currents
Higher wind speeds bring an increased risk of rip currents to the coast. Life threatening rip currents are possible near shore through Thursday. The risk could continue through the rest of the week, and there is a chance the NWS will need to issue a higher risk warning.
Should vacationers brave the rain and head to the beach, they should be vigilant when entering the water. If a swimmer does get caught in a rip current, they should relax and swim along the shoreline until the current stops.
