Friday weather update: Thunderstorms to hit Hilton Head on Friday afternoon
Following a bout of severe weather from Tuesday to Thursday, thunderstorms will once again sweep across the Lowcounty Friday afternoon.
As a cold front moves though the state, it will also bring another bout of thunderstorms to the area on Friday afternoon. The Friday storms will likely arrive after traveling across central Plains states during a period when the atmosphere is warmer and more unstable, triggering the severe thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service had predicted severe weather Thursday mid-afternoon and into the evening in Hilton Head and the surrounding areas. While the main threat was high winds and heavy rain, hail and an isolated tornado could also sweep through the region. Forecasters had predict that the powerful storms will arrive in the region around 2 p.m. and could continue to threaten the area until 11 p.m.
Severe weather will likely arrive in Hilton Head between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday afternoon. Much of the Lowcountry has a lower risk than most of the state, but weather models suggest that severe storms could still reach the coast. Severe weather will likely arrive in Hilton Head between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Damaging winds, downed trees and large hail are possible in the area. Meteorologists expect rainfall amounts less than half an inch.
