Heavy rains in Beaufort County lead to flooding on roads. Here’s where

Heavy rain falling across Beaufort County is leading to flooding on some roads. Water is accumulating on Castle Rock Road near SC 170 as well as the ramp to US 278 eastbound from SC 170. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when moving through those areas.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service predicted that Beaufort County would experience about 6-8 inches of rain between Thursday May 8 and Wednesday May 14. According to a forecaster, the heaviest rainfall has already occurred. But there will still be rainfall and scattered thunderstorms throughout the day. The greatest flooding risk occurs today through Tuesday.

A low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico is currently pushing moisture up from the tropics, according to the NWS. This system, coupled with a cold front arriving in the area this afternoon is causing all the thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The eastbound ramp to US-278 from SC-170 is flooded Monday morning, following heavy rain.
