Hilton Head to experience severe thunderstorms, possible tornadoes Monday evening
While Hilton Head will avoid the worst of the storm, spring break vacationers should pack up their beach umbrellas and chairs as severe weather heads into the region.
A large band on thunderstorms is moving across the state ahead of a slow moving cold front. These storms will likely bring high wind, showers and a slight tornado risk, according to the National Weather Service. Hilton Head residents and vacationers can expect the several rounds of showers and possible thunderstorms to arrive Monday between 3 and 9 p.m. .
The highest risk to the area comes from locally damaging wind gusts, which could exceed 60 miles per hour. The damaging wind gusts are likely to approach levels high enough to knock down trees, according to the NWS.
Total rainfall is likely to approach one inch, though higher amounts are also possible. If there is a tornado, it’s likely to be small and weak, according to a newsletter from Frank Strait, the severe weather liaison with the state Department of Natural Resources.
