Hilton Head residents and visitors should plan on packing up their beach umbrella Monday afternoon as severe thunderstorms reach the area.

The National Weather Service predicts that a line of strong thunderstorms will move across the region Monday afternoon and into the evening. Risk include damaging winds that may exceed 60 miles per hour, large hail, lightening and a small risk of tornadoes.

Overnight, the risk for the Hilton Head area was downgraded from a “enhanced risk” to a “slight risk,” according to the NWS grading system.

The storms will form in front of a cold front that is moving across the region, and severe weather will form as the cold and warm air meet. It’s likely the Lowcountry will fare better than other areas upstate. Near Hilton Head there is a lesser risk of severe hail and wind along the coast than other areas of the state, according to the NWS.

The storms will likely reach Hilton Head in the early evening between 6 and 8 p.m.
