Didn’t get to enjoy snow on the beach in Hilton Head area? You still may have a chance
Even as daytime temperatures rise, Beaufort County residents may still see snow and ice on the beaches in the coming days.
While temperatures rise into the high 30s and upper 40s through the weekend, nighttime lows will still drop below freezing. These freezing temperatures will cause existing snow and ice to refreeze.
On Thursday, the only window of opportunity for ice and snow to melt is during the afternoon, as the temperature rises to 38 degrees, which isn’t far above freezing.
“Then on top of that, you don’t really have the sun on your side (Thursday),” Brittany Schaller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.
Friday is the first good opportunity for the snow and ice to dissipate, as the temperature will rise into the 40s and the sun will be out, the NWS said. Even then, however, the low Friday and Saturday night is below freezing, so much of what melted will then refreeze.
The current Sunday forecast shows that the nighttime temperature will remain just above freezing. Until then, there is a chance that black ice will form on the roads during night.
