Savannah-Hilton Head Airport to resume flights after 3 days without them. Here’s when
After three days of grounded flights because of snowy runways, the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport plans to resume flights starting at noon Friday.
The opening comes after numerous flights were canceled following the winter storm that blew through the area Tuesday.
However, the Hilton Head Island Airport’s airfield remains closed until further notice as crews work to clear the runways.
Airlines at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport began preemptively canceling flights, including incoming flights, starting Tuesday due to the inclement weather that hit the area.
The snow and frozen precipitation has caused problems on the airport’s runways. Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport does not have road salt or plows on hand to clear the runways, according to Lori Lynah, a spokesperson for the airport.
As of Friday morning, the runways and taxiways were clear, according to Lynah. Working with the airport’s own equipment, as well as contractors, they were able to remove the remaining ice and snow.
The Hilton Head Island Airport remains closed, citing on its Facebook page snow and weather conditions for its closure. The airport terminal will open at 11 a.m. Friday, but only so rental car companies can continue their operations.
Those traveling Friday and in the coming days are encouraged to check with their airline to confirm flight information.
“It’s a moving target,” Lynah said. “So it’s best to check with carriers.”
There have been hundreds of flight cancellations over the last three days at the Savannah-Hilton Head airport. As of Thursday afternoon, there were three delays and 109 cancellations, according to Flight Aware.
Those looking to return a rental car can use the available drop boxes at their rental company’s counter if an attendant is not on duty, according to the airport’s Facebook page.
