Could thunderstorms upend Labor Day plans on Hilton Head Island? Here’s the forecast
After a seasonably warm weekend predicted for Beaufort County, a cold front moving into the Lowcountry on Labor Day could dampen the holiday, according to the National Weather Service’s Charleston Office.
Saturday and Sunday will be warm and dry and a good weekend to be out on the water, NWS Meteorologist Carl Barnes said during a Thursday morning weather briefing. However, the front creeping in Monday and stalling in the area through Tuesday could bring afternoon rain and it will drop temperatures below normal.
“Right now, it’s not looking like severe weather threat, but anytime it’s warm and humid like it is this time of year, there is going to be potential for some stronger to maybe severe thunderstorms,” Barnes said.
While a tropical wave over the central Tropical Atlantic Ocean on Thursday had a 40% chance of development into a tropical depression within the next week, Barnes said if a system does form, it’s predicted to march westward.
“With that still being pretty far out in the extended period, it’s something that is worth continuing to monitor,” he said.
Over the next two-to-three weeks, meteorologists expect the tropics to kick up.
Barnes said it’s “very likely” tropical cyclones will begin to develop at the start of September and forecasters expect a “much more” active period later in September. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the season peaks Sept. 10. Meteorologists with AccuWeather predicted between six and 10 tropical systems could develop in September.
“We don’t want people to let their guards down,” Barnes said. “There’s still a lot of time left in hurricane season.”
