Delays and cancellations expected at the airport. Here’s what we know
Friday flying just got a little more difficult. A massive global technology outage early Friday hit computers around the world, affecting emergency response services, hospitals, and even airlines, according to The New York Times. Savannah-Hilton Head International was not spared from the impact.
Lori Lynah, the Director of Marketing and Air Services for the airport said around 6:30 a.m. Friday that besides the 6 a.m. Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago, “nothing is moving.” She added that there are already people in line to make changes to their travel plans, fearing they will miss connections. Lynah did not have an update on when exactly things will start moving again.
According the Savannah-Hilton Head International flight status page, there were 30 departures scheduled between 5:15 a.m. and noon Friday, and as of 7 a.m., 16 have been delayed or canceled. The first arrival of the morning is still scheduled to land at 8:34 a.m. from Charlotte. But already, five arrivals between 10:20 a.m and 12:15 p.m. have been either delayed or canceled.
As of 8 a.m., American Airlines flights were expected to board soon, said Lynah, so travelers can expect to see things slowly catch up throughout the day.
