While pouring rain is already mucking up the morning commute, the onslaught isn’t predicted to stop and is likely to get worse, according to the National Weather Service on Wednesday morning.

The service said scattered showers and thunderstorms would head to Beaufort County as early as 3 p.m. and lasting as late as 9 p.m.

Based on the NWS’ severe thunderstorm risk map, Beaufort had a higher likelihood of being walloped by severe weather compared to Hilton Head Island.

Isolated severe thunderstorms could produce quarter-size hail and winds up to 60 mph, the NWS said. However, the impact from potential pelting hail and whipping winds is limited. Strong winds can cause damage to trees, mobile homes, roofs and cars. They can also cause widespread power outages.

Rain accumulation in the county could amount up to an inch, the service predicted.

NWS’ Charleston Office warned Wednesday morning that a large area of moderate-to-heavy rain near Hilton Head and extending offshore will move into the Charleston Metro area between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

“Be prepared for ponding of water on roadways and low visibilities,” the service posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Currently, NWS has not issued any alerts.
