Monday is expected to end with a stormy evening, and even more rain is forecast in the week ahead.

For a short time around 2 p.m. Monday, special weather statements were issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston warning of the possibility of up to 55 mph wind and penny-sized hail on Hilton Head Island and in the Lady’s Island and Beaufort area.

Both of those alerts expired by 3:30 p.m., though both Beaufort and Jasper counties could see additional hazardous weather on Monday night.

Isolated severe thunderstorms through the evening may include damaging wind gusts that could down trees and power lines, according to the weather service. Rainfall amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are expected Monday night, with locally higher amounts possible and the risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas.

The weather service recommends being alert to changes in the weather and seeking shelter in a sturdy structure.
