Beaufort County headed back to chilly winter temps. Here’s what to expect this weekend
Perhaps Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction was right. Winter is not yet behind us in the Lowcountry.
After two days of sunshine and springlike 70-degree warmth, Beaufort County is headed back to wet weather and brisk temperatures this weekend.
A cold front was creeping into the Lowcountry on Thursday evening and will continue into Friday, and severe weather liaison Frank Strait said that will not only bring rain but the potential for severe thunderstorms.
Strait, with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, said across the state, the Lowcountry is most likely to get the hit. Along with the storms blowing in, cold temperatures will return, with Sunday reaching a high of only 50 degrees.
As the storm tracks northeastward along the Carolina coastline through Sunday, Strait said this kind of track during this time of year “sometimes” produces a snow-dusting across the Palmetto State. However, the National Weather Service’s predictions show that low temperatures will drop only to around 39 this weekend.
“If we get snow out of this setup, it’s like an angler foul-hooking a fish,” Strait quipped in a news release.
If parts of South Carolina do get snow, the Lowcountry is the least likely to see it.
Because the moon is not in a full or new moon phase, the low astronomical tides mean there’s a lower risk of flooding from storms.
A 90% chance of precipitation will kick off Friday morning, and a potential for thunderstorms will continue through the day Sunday. Rain relief will come Monday, and temperatures will stay in the 60s.
What’s Strait’s bottom line?
“You don’t need to plan a bread-and-milk run just yet. Let’s keep the demand for that stuff low right now,” he said.
Weekend weather
Friday: Showers and possible thunderstorms after 9 a.m. and into the evening. Chance of precipitation is 90%. High 69, low 51.
Saturday: Showers and possible thunderstorms after 1 p.m. and before 1 a.m. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Wind gusts up to 28 mph. High 57, low 42.
Sunday: A 30% chance of showers before 1 p.m. Later, partly sunny with a high around 50. The evening will clear up. Low near 39.
