Beaufort, Jasper counties under tornado watch Wednesday. Here’s when to head inside

Despite the clear and cool morning, Beaufort and Jasper counties are under a tornado watch until 2 p.m., according to an alert sent by the National Weather Service on Wednesday.

A tornado watch means tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area, the NWS noted. The service added that the watch area is typically large, covering multiple counties or states. Twenty additional South Carolina counties were under the same alert Wednesday morning.

Under the watch, wind gusts of up to 70 mph are possible, as well as hail up to a 1/4 inch in size.

The service urged residents to review and discuss emergency plans, check supplies and a safe room. If a tornado warning is later issued, indicating a twister has been sighted or seen on radar, preparedness will be beneficial.

The early morning began with pockets of dense sea fog around coastal communities in the southeast section of the state, from Hilton Head north to McClellanville. As the day goes on, showers and thunderstorms are likely to move into the Lowcountry beginning around 1 p.m.

New rainfall amounts will be between a 1/10 and a 1/4 inch, except higher amounts are possible with thunderstorms, the service said.

On Thursday, skies will clear and temperature will climb to about 69.
