Wind chill in single digits as temperatures expected to drop again Saturday night

Wind chills in Beaufort County fell into the single digits on Saturday morning, and while the wind died down some through the day, temperatures remained bitterly cold.

Reports from the National Weather Service Charleston noted a wind chill of 3 degrees at 8:15 a.m. Saturday in Beaufort. A 5 degree wind chill was recorded at Hilton Head Airport just before 7 a.m.

Meteorologist Rebecca Shaw with NWS Charleston said overnight temperatures in Beaufort County fell as low as 19 degrees. That was close to record-setting but didn’t replace the current record low of 16 degrees set in 1989.

Saturday night’s temperatures are expected to be comparable to Friday night’s. Heavy cloud cover kept temperatures even lower than expected through the day.

“Tonight will still be cold, so everyone will need to take the same precautions,” Shaw emphasized.

A 4 p.m. briefing from the National Weather Service said the coldest temperatures would likely be around daybreak on Christmas Day.

The Lowcountry, including Beaufort and Jasper counties, and southeast Georgia will be under a wind chill advisory from 11 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Wind chills were expected to be between 8 and 14 degrees.

There is no rain or snow in the forecast.

The extreme cold and high winds are part of Winter Storm Elliott, which is affecting much of the United States, bringing extreme low temperatures, snow and ice, canceling hundreds of flights and causing power outages.

Just before 4 p.m. Saturday, Palmetto Electric reported 12 residences without power in Beaufort County, while 11 Dominion Energy customers were without power. No power outages were reported in Jasper County.

Sea Island Presbyterian Church at 81 Lady’s Island Drive in Beaufort planned to open its warming shelter from 5:30 p.m. Saturday to 8:30 a.m. Sunday and again from 5:30 p.m. Sunday to 8:30 a.m. Monday.
