High winds, thunderstorms possible in Beaufort County region on Saturday. What to know
An oncoming cold front to Beaufort County and the surrounding Lowcountry could result in high winds from scattered thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon into the evening, according to weather forecasters.
The National Weather Service in Charleston is predicting a risk for severe thunderstorms across the Lowcountry and southeastern Georgia on Saturday.
That means there’s a potential the thunderstorms could produce winds exceeding 58 mph, said Michael Stroz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
“The main threats are going to be wind and hail,” Stroz said. They could happen for a few hours late this afternoon into the evening, he said.
Stroz urged residents “to heed any of the warnings that come out from us and the local officials as well.”
If the storms produce hail, they could potentially be around one inch in diameter, a forecast said.
The chance of precipitation in Beaufort County is 60%, according to the NWS forecast.
Any showers or thunderstorms are expected before 11 p.m., it said.
Last weekend, severe winds knocked out power for many Beaufort County residents.
