Rain and high tides are ‘perfect combination’ for flooding. Here’s Beaufort Co.’s forecast
Thursday’s new moon combined with rain and winds from the northeast have the potential to cause “minor to moderate” flooding this weekend along South Carolina’s coast, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Charleston.
A bulletin from the National Weather Service indicated that there would be a potential for flooding throughout the weekend. The winds are what is causing the water to be higher than it would be on top of the “astronomical influences” of a new moon, said Bob Bright, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service.
“Probably the worst inundation will come on Saturday morning’s high tide,” Bright said.
This is because, according to the bulletin, rain is expected to hit the area around the same time. As of Thursday morning, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Charleston were not “too confident” about how many inches of rainfall are expected in the area, Bright said.
“It’s just a perfect combination of oceanographic and atmospheric influences,” he said.
Thursday’s high is 59 degrees and is expected to fall to 48 degrees at night, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service. Winds could reach up to 13 mph Thursday, and it will be mostly cloudy at night.
Friday will be cloudy with a high of 59 degrees, with a 20 percent chance of rain after 3 p.m. and winds reaching up to 14 mph. After 8 p.m., there is a 40 percent chance of rain.
Winds on Saturday are expected to reach up to 15 mph with a 30 percent chance of rain and a low around 48 degrees. Before 2 a.m., there is a 20 percent chance of rain.
Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high of 68 degrees and a low of 47 degrees, according to the forecast.
