The South Carolina State Fair announced Friday the official call for exhibit entries for 2016. The fair runs from October 12-23 at the Fairgrounds on Rosewood Drive and George Rogers Boulevard in Columbia.

The fair, which enjoys more than half a million visitors each year, is asking gardeners, bakers, farmers and artisans to enter competitions to win a State Fair blue ribbon and part of the more-than $300,000 offered in premiums and awards.

All competitions require pre-registration, which is open through Sept. 1.

Competitive exhibit categories include

  • fine art,
  • student art,

These particular competitions are limited to South Carolina residents and students attending a South Carolina school of higher learning.

The livestock categories are open to anyone. Those exhibit categories are:

  • cattle,
  • dairy goat,
  • sheep,
  • smallstock,
  • swine,
  • youth horse, and
  • 4-H/FFA meat goat.
