Survey: The Confederate battle flag is leaving the State House; what is your response?
After a contentious, 13-hour debate, the SC House of Representatives passed the Senate's bill to remove the Confederate battle flag from the Confederate Monument on the State House grounds, with large majorities.
We'd like to gauge our readers' feelings about this historic event, which followed on the heels of the June 17, 2015, mass shooting of parishioners gathered at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church. The suspect told police he wanted to shoot black people, and he maintained a blog on which he posted photographs of himself draped in the flag. The deaths brought anti-flag sentiment to a head and helped realize the goal of many business and legislative leaders in the state: to remove it from public display. They argued the flag is a distraction, a symbol of heritage for some, but reviled by too many others to serve as a unifying symbol for all South Carolinians.
