Aynor couple in police custody following search for baby

An Aynor couple, who were wanted since July in connection with the disappearance of a baby, were arrested Friday in North Carolina, Horry County police Lt. Raul Denis said.

Officials received a tip about the couple being in Tabor City, N.C., and police there took them into custody without incident, Denis said.

Charles Lester Ammons, 42, and Kaitlyn Courville, 24, both of Aynor have been wanted on charges of custodial interference since July involving their baby, 1-year-old Zander Ammons. Horry County police issued warrants for the couple’s arrest in July.

Horry County police have been working with officials of the Department of Social Services in the case, which began in June when a court order was issued to the officials to take custody of the baby, police said.

When DSS employees went to take custody of the baby they could not find him, police said.

Officials determined the parents were no longer at their listed address. Officials were able to speak to the baby’s parents by telephone, but they refused to give him up and were hiding from DSS workers.

Denis said that at first after their arrest Ammons and Courville refused to provide officials with the location of the baby, but officials did find the baby and he is in DSS custody.
