A body was pulled from Lake Hartwell Monday by members of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office after it was spotted in the water beneath the Highway 93 bridge near Clemson University, officials say.

The body was recovered from the water after the sheriff’s office was notified around 3:30 p.m. by the Clemson University Police Department, Oconee County Sheriff’s department spokesman Jimmy Watt said in a statement released Monday.

The body was discovered near the lake’s shore in a rocky area beneath the bridge that runs over the Seneca River in about four to five feet of water, Watt said.

The body was retrieved around 5:15 p.m. and was determined to be that of a man, he said.

No additional details were available Monday night. An autopsy is expected to take place Tuesday.

The department is continuing to investigate, Watt said.
