A Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple will be built on 8.8 acres on Roper Mountain Road not far from the interchange of 385 and 85, church officials announced Tuesday.

It will be the second in South Carolina, which has almost 47,000 LDS members in 90 wards and branches. The Columbia South Carolina Temple was dedicated in 1999. Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are generally referred to as Mormons.

The Greenville temple will be a single-story, 18,850 square-foot building at the south intersection of Independence Boulevard/Ponders and Roper Mountain Road.

A rendering of the building has not been released.

“This holy building will bring sacred blessings and peace to the Upstate region,” the LDS Greenville Stake said on Facebook. “We look forward with immense gratitude to watching this holy house rise as a beacon of light, peace, and hope in the community.”

The first Latter-day Saint in South Carolina is believed to have been Emanuel Masters Murphy, who was baptized in Tennessee in 1836, thechurchnews.org said.

South Carolina’s first stake was created in Columbia in 1947 when membership totaled 1,869. In 1975, the South Carolina Columbia Mission was organized from the Georgia Atlanta Mission.

Also announced Tuesday was a site for the Caldwell Idaho Temple, a multistory, 82,000-square-foot building on 19.2 acres.

Both temples, along with 13 others, were announced April 6, 2025, during a general conference.
