Dozens of flights scheduled for airport in Columbia have been canceled
A winter storm forecast for South Carolina’s Midlands has caused schools to change schedules, businesses to close and now flights to be canceled at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
Six flights scheduled to take off from Columbia on Sunday morning have been canceled, according to the airport’s website.
Of the 34 flights scheduled to land at the airport in Columbia on Sunday, 27 have been canceled as of 9:30 a.m., the website shows.
A reason for the cancellations was not listed on the website, but the Columbia area as well as South Carolina and much of the U.S. is in the grips of a powerful winter storm.
An ice storm warning is in effect in the Midlands, and is set to run through 1 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Information about Monday’s flights arriving and departing from Columbia Metropolitan Airport was not available.
“Travel is strongly discouraged,” said the National Weather Service said., making it clear that warning’s not limited driver’s on the road and also includes air travel. “Persons should consider delaying all travel.”
While significant icing is possible in the Columbia area, the storm named Fern by the Weather Channel is forecast to cause widespread and long-lasting effects in 34 states. That includes grounding flights across the nation.
