The familiar “While I Breathe, I Hope” South Carolina license plate is no more.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the state will start issuing new standard license plates to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War.

The design honors South Carolina’s pivotal role in America’s independence, replacing the familiar blue plate featuring the palmetto tree, crescent moon and the state motto that was introduced in late 2015.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles began issuing a new South Carolina license plate in 2016, featuring the palmetto tree and crescent moon in indigo with a white background. It uses the state motto, ‘While I Breathe, I Hope.’

What to know about the transition

The transition comes as part of House Bill 3175, a state law signed on May 12, 2025, by Gov. Henry McMaster, requiring license plate redesigns every 10 years.

Drivers can continue using their current plates until their renewal date, at which time the new design will automatically be issued — no extra cost, unless a special or personalized plate is selected.

As plates are replaced, drivers will receive new sequential numbers unless they have personalized plates.

This new American Revolution plate will be one of the two standard options drivers can get. The “In God We Trust” plate will continue as an alternative standard option, according to South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles’ spokesperson Mike Fitts.

What does the SC250 plate feature?

The new standard plate, officially known as the SC250 Plate, will feature the slogan “Where the Revolutionary War Was Won” – a nod to South Carolina’s role in weakening British forces in 1776, just days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The design centers on the blue Moultrie Flag, bearing the word “Liberty” in white on an indigo background and a crescent-shaped gorget in the upper corner.

It depicts Sgt. William Jasper hoisting the flag after South Carolina troops triumphed over the British Navy at the Battle of Fort Sullivan in 1776.

Created by the South Carolina Revolutionary War Sestercentennial Commission, the design will remain in circulation through Dec. 31, 2032, when the next scheduled reissue occurs.

Chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2018, the SC Revolutionary War Sestercentennial Commission’s purpose is to orchestrate observances of the American Revolution’s 250th anniversary in South Carolina. In addition, the commission states that it celebrates and promotes the state’s role in the American Revolution by “educating, engaging, and inspiring South Carolinians and visitors.”

In 2021, the commission introduced a similar specialty plate bearing the slogan “250th Anniversary of the Revolutionary War,” but the 2026 version with the updated slogan will now serve as the state’s standard plate.

New SC driver’s licenses and IDs, too

In addition to new license plates, the SCDMV is rolling out redesigned driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The update introduces more security features, including laser engraving, enhanced durability along with embedded state symbols such as the Palmetto tree, Statehouse, Yellow Jessamine flower, the Carolina Wren bird, and Loggerhead Sea Turtle.

One of the most noteworthy features is how the new cards are issued.

South Carolinians will no longer leave the DMV with a license in hand. Instead, they’ll leave with a temporary certificate valid for up to 30 days, while the new card is mailed within 7–15 business days.

Each certificate includes a QR code that allows customers to track production and mailing status.

Existing licenses remain valid until their expiration date, and the renewal cost stays the same: $25 for an eight-year license.
